Croissant

Croissant for writers

Let readers support your newsletter, blog or fiction with one-off tips. Set up a Croissant page, add it to your posts and keep your writing free.

Updated

If you write a newsletter, a blog, essays or serial fiction, some of your readers would like a simple way to say thanks. Croissant gives you a tip page at croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname where they can buy you a croissant in a few clicks, with no account needed.

Why tips suit writers

  • Your writing stays free. No paywall, no subscriber-only posts. Anyone can read, and those who want to can give back.
  • No extra obligations. A tip doesn't come with a promise of bonus content or a publishing schedule.
  • Readers find you one piece at a time. Someone who loved a single essay can say thanks without subscribing to anything.

Setting up

  1. Sign in with Google and claim your address.
  2. Add your name, a short bio, an avatar and a cover. Your bio might say what you write and what support helps with. See customising your page.
  3. Set a thank-you message readers see after they pay.
  4. Connect Stripe so payouts go to your bank.
  5. Publish the page.

Where to put your link

  • The end of every post. Readers who reach the bottom have just got value from your work.
  • Your newsletter footer. One line in every issue, always there.
  • Your about page and site footer.
  • Your social bios and link-in-bio page.

The guide on adding a support link has copy-and-paste examples.

Sample wording

End of a post:

Thanks for reading. If you enjoyed this, you can buy me a croissant at croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname. It helps me keep writing.

Newsletter footer:

This newsletter is free. If it's become part of your week, a croissant now and then helps keep it going: croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname

After a long or especially useful piece:

This one took a few weekends to research. If it was useful, a croissant would be a lovely thank-you.

Read the messages

Readers can leave a message with their tip, and you can reply from your dashboard. Notes from readers about a specific piece are often the most rewarding part. See how to thank your supporters.

Costs

Croissant takes 1% per tip with no monthly fee. Stripe's processing fee is separate (around 2.9% + 30¢ for US cards). Details on the fees page.
