Croissant

Croissant for developers

Let users of your open source projects, tools and tutorials say thanks with one-off tips. Add a Croissant link to your README and docs in minutes.

Updated

If you maintain an open source library, publish developer tools or write technical tutorials, people who rely on your work may want to support it. Croissant gives you a simple tip page at croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname. One link, one-off tips, payouts to your bank.

Why tips suit developers

  • No sponsorship tiers to design. You don't need to promise priority support or logos in your README.
  • Works for small and large projects. A tiny utility that saved someone an afternoon is worth a croissant.
  • Easy for users at work. Someone can tip in a minute with a card, without signing up.

Setting up

  1. Sign in with Google and claim your address. Using your usual handle helps people recognise it.
  2. Write a short bio naming your main projects and what support helps with, such as time for maintenance.
  3. Connect Stripe for payouts and publish your page.

Where to put your link

  • Your README. A short "Support" section near the bottom.
  • A FUNDING file. GitHub's sponsor button can show custom links, so add your Croissant URL there.
  • Your docs site footer or about page.
  • Release notes for bigger releases.
  • Your personal site and profile bios.

Example README section in Markdown:

## Support

If this project saves you time, you can [buy me a croissant](https://croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname).

Example FUNDING file entry:

custom: ["https://croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname"]

There's no embeddable widget, but you can make your own button in HTML that links to your page. See adding a support link for examples.

Sample wording

README:

This project is maintained in my spare time. If it's useful to you or your team, you can support it at croissant.beffa.xyz/yourname.

Release notes:

Thanks to everyone who reported issues for this release. If you'd like to support continued work, there's a croissant link in the README.

Tutorial:

If this tutorial got your build working, consider buying me a croissant. It helps me write more of these.

Pricing for a technical audience

Developers who use your code at work may be comfortable with a higher price per croissant than a general audience. You can set anywhere from $1 to $100. See setting your croissant price.

Costs

1% per tip to Croissant, no monthly fee, plus Stripe processing (around 2.9% + 30¢ for US cards). See fees.

Questions

›Can I add Croissant to GitHub's sponsor button?

Yes. Add your Croissant page URL as a custom link in your repository's FUNDING file and it will appear in the sponsor button.

›Does Croissant support recurring sponsorships?

No. Croissant handles one-off tips only. See the tips vs memberships guide for when a recurring setup might suit you better.

›Is there a badge or widget for READMEs?

Croissant provides a link rather than a badge or widget. A plain Markdown link works well in READMEs.
